3D Printing Applications in Animation

We have seen animation studios like LAIKA use 3D printing technology to create their characters, even the weapons on Men in Black 3 were created using Objet printers.

The link below will bring you to a video that illustrates how a Dutch company uses 3D printing for their animation shorts. This was commissioned by advertising agency Kesselskramer, produced at Nexus Productions, and was made in collaboration with model maker / sculptor Jethro Haynes. The apples and core models were built using 3D printing technology in order to maintain the logo shape.

3D Printing Prompts a Quantum Leap for Stop Motion

Remember those old claymation and stop motion shows we used to watch as kids like Gumby and Celebrity Death Match? It used to take producers an entire day to create seven minutes of usable footage. In the old days of stop motion it was very challenging to keep the shot from looking “shaky” due to the models falling (lack of base weight) or from handling the clay too much. Today, 3D printing makes similar problem non-existent. The creators of the new animated film “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” utilized 3D printing technology to create the expressions of the characters. Imagine printing over 8,000 mouths to bring various characters to life! It is definitely remains a long process, just without the traditional headaches.
